How to Stay Sane While You #StayHome
How to Stay Sane While You #StayHome
We are in uncharted territory with a California state-wide shelter in place mandate keeping everyone cooped up at home. Isolation is tough and trust me, we get it. It’s hard to stay sane while you #stayhome, especially for our community of active outdoor lovers. But just like a big day in the mountains, we are in this for the long haul. We need to dig deep into our endurance reserves and keep on keeping on until our vulnerable mountain community is safe from the threat COVID-19.
So, how do you stay sane while you #stayhome? We caught up with our ambassadors and asked them a few questions to find out what they’re doing. Here’s what they said –
What are you doing to stay fit during the shutdown? Do you have any favorite home workouts?
Chris
I have a bike and some kettlebells at home, so I’m staying active for sure. I’m unemployed, so lots of time to get shredded right now.

Becky and I transformed our garage into a makeshift gym and we’ve been snowshoeing daily with the dog in the backyard.

We have a Peloton, and it’s actually awesome when you need to be inside, or just want a quick workout. In addition to the bike, they have yoga, stretching, strength training, and boot camp classes. It’s like having your own personal instructor whenever you want it! We actually moved our lower level furniture around, bought a weight bench and some weights. We don’t have an excuse!

My Peloton bike! I’ve always loved this thing, but I have a new appreciation for it now! It has kept me sane and fit. Peloton also has a digital app that can be used on pretty much any mobile device and doesn’t require the user to own either their bike or treadmill. I used the app on my standard treadmill and it’s awesome to keep from getting bored! The app has a ton of content with classes for yoga, strength training, treadmill, and spin classes. They even just launched “dance cardio” content which has been fun for my daughter!

I’m taking online yoga classes – Namaste has some live classes on Zoom now (for free, $5, and $10). I’m also teaching a couple classes, check them out!
What is your favorite way to get outside right now?
Chris
I’ve been enjoying putting in headphones and walking the neighborhood/Donner Lake shoreline while listening to an album cover to cover. It’s been one of my favorite things to do since I was a kid, but I rarely have/take the time to listen to full albums as they were intended. NOW WE HAVE TIME!
Kim
No matter what the weather, I always have to get out and at least walk the dog. We also like to Nordic ski together. Now that TD has stopped grooming, we can head over there with our classic skis and hit any of the trails that we want. Last weekend, we all skied up to Drifter together, including the dog. She napped the rest of the afternoon!
Mone
Walking in our neighborhood! We’ve made it a challenge to walk every street in the neighborhood! My daughter even has her own little “heat map” which she’s using to track which streets we’ve covered with a good old fashioned paper map and highlighter! Once the snow clears from the trails, we’ll be expanding our territory to the trails and fire-roads surrounding our neighborhood as well via foot and bike.
Coral
I’ve been enjoying walks around the neighborhood and stopping by Donner Lake to enjoy the beauty.

Our ambassadors sent us so many great recipes that we had to create a separate blog post, just for that!

What’s on your reading list?
Chris
Currently reading a biography of the jazz pianist Thelonious Monk, and the next book on my list is “Range” by David Epstein.
Kyle
I am currently reading CAMP 4 recollections of a Yosemite rock climber. Thankfully I am a slow enough reader that this book should last me to the next major crisis.
Kim
I just finished reading World Without End by Ken Follett. Interesting (and concerning) because much of the story is centered around the Plague in the 1300s. If you like Ken Follett, this is a good one, and as with all his books, it takes a while to get through. If you haven’t read Pillars of the Earth or Eye of the Needle, those are both great Ken Follett reads.
