Avalanche Education Class

Learn how to stay safe in avalanche terrain! An avalanche education class is a must for anyone heading out into the backcountry, one of the 7 Important Dos and Don’ts of Backcountry Skiing. Every weekend during winter, we host Tahoe Mountain School avalanche education courses at our retail shop. Their team of local avy pros can teach you everything from backcountry basics to self-rescue techniques to advanced snow science.

If you’re brand new to backcountry skiing or splitboarding, start by taking a one-day Intro to Backcountry Class. It’s a pre-requisite for your AIARE 1 Avalanche Course and is designed for people that have ski resort experience and want to get onto the skintrack for their first time. In this course, you’ll cover how to use backcountry ski gear, including avalanche rescue equipment, along with uphill and downhill techniques and skills.

Tahoe Mountain School also offers private guiding, AIARE 1 & 2 Avalanche Courses, AIARE 1 Refresher, and an AIARE Self Rescue Course. Whether you’re just learning the ropes or a seasoned backcountry pro, it’s important to continue your avalanche education through lifelong learning.

*Pro tip: book your course and backcountry ski or splitboard rental in advance as they tend to sell out early in the season!
