9/9 UPDATE: Tahoe National Forest is CLOSED, Trail Bingo has ENDED

The US Forest Service has temporarily closed all National Forests in California. The Tahoe National Forest is closed beginning at 5 pm on September 9th through September 14th. Here’s what that means:

  • All campgrounds are closed
  • All roads in the National Forest System are closed
  • No dispersed camping
  • No day-use
  • No recreation (hiking, climbing, mountain biking, etc.)

While unfortunate, these closures are necessary to protect our community and the hard-working wildland firefighters battling historic blazes throughout California. Read the full USFS news release here.

Do your research and respect the closures. We find Caltopo to be a helpful resource that details US Forest Service boundaries. You can also find maps of the Tahoe National Forest on their website. Please remember to #RecreateResponsibly and act conservatively during this time of heightened fire danger.

Updated Trail Bingo Rules

Due to these unforeseen circumstances, the Trail Bingo contest has ended and the following changes apply.

  • No activities after 5 pm on September 9th will be counted towards the Trail Bingo contest. Respect the trail closures.
  • Bingo boards must be turned in at Tahoe Mountain Sports by 6 pm on Sunday, September 13th.
  • Any bingo boards with 5 boxes in a row (a true bingo) will count as TWO entries.
  • Any bingo boards with 4 boxes in a row will count as ONE entry.
  • Those that tagged us in a social media post will double their entry.
  • If you previously did not tag us but want to double your entry, you still can by doing the following: Tag @TahoeMountainSports, Mention that the Tahoe National Forest is CLOSED, and use the hashtags #RespectTheClosure and #GearUpTruckee.

COVID-19 Trail Etiquette

Wear a Face Covering – Please carry a face covering on the trail and wear it over your nose and mouth when you are passing others or anytime you cannot maintain 6 feet of distance between other trail users.

Share the Trail – Whether you’re riding, hiking, or running, make sure to be courteous of others and share the trail. Call out when you are passing, wear a face covering, and provide ample distance between yourself and others. When passing, move off the trail at least 6 feet if the terrain allows, turn your face away, and do not trample sensitive vegetation.

Leave No Trace – Carry a plastic bag with you and pack out all of your trash. Stay on the trail, except to pass others, and do not trample sensitive vegetation.

Park in Designated Parking Spots – Trails are busier than ever because of COVID-19. If a parking lot is full, go somewhere else. Only park in designated spots at the trailhead.

Control Your Dog – If you choose to adventure with your furry friend, make sure they are under control at all times. Carry a leash and follow all leash regulations.
